Mr. Keane

  • Bible- Winning the Race, the study of various Bible characters and an overview of the Book of Revelation. Students learn how the principles of God’s Word can help them gain victory in the race of life.  Weekly memory verses and a fruit of the Spirit is discussed and illustrated
  • Math- Sixth graders explore and master math concepts as adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers, decimals, fractions with like and unlike denominations; problem solving with integers, rational numbers, and real numbers; geometry; ratios; proportions, and percent; measurement; money; solving algebraic equations; and collecting, organizing, and analyzing data
  • Language- Systematic study of grammar, composition and mechanics. Currently reviewing Research procedures and unit on Nouns, then Pronouns, and Adjectives.
  • Reading- Students enjoy a variety of character-building stories as well as classical literature selections. Literary elements, higher-level thinking skills, and vocabulary enrichment is a bridge to the traditional literature classes that begin in middle school.
  • Spelling- Word lists illustrate key spelling rules and commonly misspelled words. Students study Greek and Latin roots and practice editing skills.
    History/Social Studies-chronological overview of Ancient history.  Classical Greece and Rome followed by the Mayans.  Geography in maps of Asia/Oceania
  • Science-scientific investigations; electricity, matter, weather, and flight, and a unit on astronomy.
  • Art- Draw Squad; drawing  a half of a President’s face; perspective of a town; framing a picture
  • Photography -  Chelsea Herschelman, a graduate of YVCS, is teaching photography techniques

Mr. Abbot

  • 7th Bible Study: Dynamic Christian Living – A practical guide to applying God’s biblical principles to everyday life.  Uses biblical citations to outline and explain the role and duties of young Christians for their earthly life.
  • 7th & 8th Math: Pre-Algebra and Algebra 1 – Review and reinforcement of arithmetic from traditional mathematics curriculum, introduction of variables and algebraic expressions, solving equations, algebra-based geometry, graphing and other visual-based mathematics concepts.  Algebra 1 covers the same topics as pre-Algebra, with emphasis on combining basic algebra concepts with more advanced critical thinking skills.
  • 7th History: World Studies – A survey of world history from the end of the European Dark Ages (about 1100 AD) to the present.  The Renaissance and Reformation, the Mongol and African Empires, discovery of the New World (Americas), colonialism and imperial conquest, and war/conflict of the last century.
  • 7th & 8th Science: Life Science – Christian foundations of biological sciences, the Living Kingdoms, Ecology/Naturalism, Microbiology, genetics/heredity, the structure and function of the human body.  The curriculum incorporates practical applications through hands on Lab activities and physical exploration of life
  • 7th Art: Artistic Pursuits – A combination of art history, technical art composition, and open-ended artistic expression.  Focuses primarily on the classic arts: painting, drawing, and sculpting.

  • 8th Bible: Wise-up – Wisdom in Proverbs, Consideration of Biblical character traits with instruction and application from both the Old and New Testaments.
  • 7th & 8th English: Grammar and Composition, Punctuation, capitalization, parts of speech, sentence structure, creative writing, essay writing, research papers
  • 7th & 8th Spelling: Word lists illustrate key spelling rules and consist of commonly misspelled words. Vocabulary lists include spelling, definition and usage exercises with antonym/synonym reviews.
  • 8th History: American History, From the explorers to the 1960s, emphasizing God’s sovereignty over all; Government studies including the Constitution; Geography with map studies; President reports and biographical studies of historical figures.
  • 7th & 8th Literature: Books, stories, poems and excerpts expose students to various forms of literature, and elements of writing; monthly book reports.
  • 8th Art: Introduction to visual arts; basic terms, processes and techniques; some traditional crafts that tie-in to history.
  • 8th Speech: Introduction to narrative, expository, and persuasive speech; poetry recitals, improvisational work, Readers Theater and skits.

Mr. Keane has been teaching for 34 years,  28 at YVCS. He is married to Karen Keane, our school librarian. They have 6 children and 13 grandchildren.  Except the 4 years in the US Navy, he has lived in Contra Costa County almost all his life.

“The Lord has decided to return me to being a full time 6th grade teacher. This is something I have always enjoyed. I am  looking forward to learning with those wonderful 11 and 12 year olds. Having some of my grandchildren at YVCS  makes this transition even more special.”

Mr. Abbott was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona.  He moved to California in 2007 to attend law school at UC Davis, where he met and married his wife Samantha.  They have lived in the bay area for less than a year, and love it!

Marjorie will soon begin her ninth year at YV and has four children and three grandchildren. When she’s not corraling middle-schoolers she enjoys traveling and has visited 49 of the 50 United States. (Currently working on her husband to take her to state #50…Hawaii!) One reason Marjorie enjoys teaching is because she agrees with Charles Dickens who said, “I love these little people; and it is not a slight thing, when they, who are so fresh from God, love us.”
